The most expensive postage stamps in the world

Philatelists hunt for exclusive postage stamps, compete at auctions, and are willing to pay crazy amounts of money to have the coveted items in their collections. The price of some of them exceeds the cost of luxury estates, elite cars, or precious jewelry.

Top 5 Most Expensive Stamps

Here are the five most expensive stamps in philatelic history, which have become real treasures and investment assets.

1. British Guiana 1c Magenta

The undisputed leader in the ranking of the world's most expensive postage stamps is the British Guiana 1c Magenta, with an interesting history and numerous owners that could be the subject of a movie. Only one copy of the stamp has survived, which has changed owners many times, each time increasing in price.

In 1856, the ship from London, which usually delivered stamps to British Guiana, was delayed. So the stamps had to be printed at a local printing house. Purple paper and black ink were used for production. To avoid counterfeiting, the stamps were certified with the signature of a postal employee. Interestingly, the owners of the surviving copy of the “British Guiana” later left their marks or initials on the back of the stamp.

In 2014, a one-cent purple postage stamp was sold at auction for a record $9.48 million. In 2021, the British Guiana was purchased at a Sotheby's auction for $8.3 million.

2. Mauritius Post Office Stamps

Next in the ranking are the Mauritius Post Office Stamps, issued in 1847.

The stamps in two denominations (one penny orange and two pence dark blue) with the profile of Queen Victoria were first printed outside the UK with the wrong text: instead of “Post Paid” — “Post Office.” Once again, a mistake turned ordinary stamps into rarities. In 1993, this postal pair was valued at over $3.8 million.

3. “The Holy Grail” (The Benjamin Franklin Z Grill)

The one-cent “Holy Grail” postage stamp featuring Benjamin Franklin was issued in 1868 and has a unique “Z” waffle pattern — an innovative embossing technology at the time to protect stamps from reuse. The relief pattern was intended to prevent the postmark from being washed off.

Only two copies of the Holy Grail stamp with a cancellation stamp have survived to this day. One copy is in the New York Public Library, and the other, which collectors discovered in 1916, is in a private collection. The stamp has appeared at auctions several times, each time with a higher price. In 2005, during an exchange, the Holy Grail was valued at $3 million.

4. Sicilian Error of Colour Stamp

“Sicilian Color Error” Instead of orange, it was blue.

Another printing error in 1859 later added $2.6 million to the price of the postage stamp — that's how much a collector paid in 2011 for the Sicilian Error of Color Stamp.

5. Treskilling Yellow

This is a case where a mistake or misprint became decisive. But while those responsible were punished for it at the time, the flawed postage stamps have become expensive collector's items.

In 1855, a stamp with a face value of three skilling (the currency of the time) was issued in Sweden. It could have remained in philatelic history as an ordinary blue-green three-skilling stamp, but the print run was mistakenly printed on yellow paper intended for 8-skilling stamps.

The only known copy of the “Yellow Treskilling” (Treskilling Yellow) was sold at auction in 1996 for $2.3 million. The current value of the stamp is unknown, as the amount was not disclosed during subsequent auctions.
