The Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory was founded in 1821 by Admiral O.S. Greig as a Navy to provide the Black Sea Fleet with maps, transmit accurate time signals to ships and teach astronomical navigation techniques.

In 1912 it was transformed into the southern branch of the Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory.
