On January 28, 1920, the first season of the Ivan Franko Theater opened in Vinnytsia with a performance of Volodymyr Vynnychenko's play Sin.

In the summer of 1926, the Ivan Franko Theater was transferred to Kyiv by government order. In 1940, the theater was awarded the title of academic. By a decree of the President of Ukraine of October 11, 1994, the cultural institution was granted national status. From the end of 2001 to 2012, the artistic director of the theater was People's Artist of Ukraine Bohdan Stupka. In the 2000s, the theater became a full member of the International Institute of Theater, an organization that facilitates contacts between theaters around the world and the exchange of information.
