Vasyl Symonenko (January 8, 1935 – December 14, 1963) was a Ukrainian poet, prose writer, and journalist, and a leading figure of the “Shistdesiatnyky” (Sixtiers) literary generation.

His poetry is marked by philosophical reflections on human existence, as well as strong anti-totalitarian and national liberation themes. Many of his most powerful works were censored or suppressed by Soviet authorities.

After his death, several collections were published, including “Gravity“ (1964), which was nominated for the Taras Shevchenko Prize; “Swans of Motherhood“ (1981); “Poems“ (1966); and the short story collection “Wine of Roses“ (1965), among others.

In 1995, Vasyl Symonenko was posthumously awarded the Taras Shevchenko National Prize.
