Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter (1915–1997) was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Of German descent, he was also a prominent cultural figure and was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the USSR.

He was born in Zhytomyr and grew up in Odesa. In 1947, he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory.

In 1960, he became the first Soviet performer to receive a Grammy Award, for his performance of Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto.

His repertoire included works by Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel, Berg, Schubert, and Schumann. He was also highly regarded as a chamber musician.

In his later years, Richter lived in Paris. Shortly before his death, he returned to Moscow on July 5, where he died on August 1, 1997.
