Marietta (Maria) Kapnist—a descendant of the legendary military commander Ivan Sirko and the renowned 18th-century poet and progressive social activist Vasyl Kapnist—endured the hell of Stalin’s most horrific labor camps as an “enemy of the people.” Fifteen years of imprisonment robbed her of her health and beauty, but did not break her spirit, willpower, or sense of humor. Maria Kapnist endured and did not dishonor the memory of her illustrious ancestors. At the age of 44, she found the strength to fulfill her childhood dream—to become an actress. She entered the world of cinema and brought to it her striking appearance and originality, precisely the flair that directors had long lacked and dreamed of. Her appearance and talent allowed her to convincingly portray countesses, ladies, and mysterious old women with enigmatic pasts. Maria Kapnist starred in over 120 feature films and created a gallery of vivid characters on the silver screen.
