Postage Issue: National Preserve "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra"

On September 29, 1926, the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most prominent holy sites, was granted the status of a state historical and cultural preserve. This decision was made to preserve the architectural complex of the oldest Orthodox monastery (first mentioned in 1051), as well as its artistic and historical-cultural heritage.

Today, the preserve covers approximately 27 hectares and contains 140 architectural monuments dating from the 11th to the 20th centuries, as well as two cave complexes. Its museum collections comprise around 73,000 items. In 1990, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, together with Saint Sophia Cathedral, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and in 1996, the preserve was granted national status.

The 100th anniversary of this outstanding institution has officially been included in the UNESCO Calendar of Anniversaries for 2026–2027, confirming the global significance of the site. For a century, Ukrainian museum professionals, archaeologists, and restorers have protected the Lavra from destruction, totalitarian pressure, and attempts to dispossess it of its history. The postage stamp issue “National Preserve ‘Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’. 100 Years” is dedicated to this holy site, which symbolizes spiritual revival, the de-occupation of Ukraine’s cultural sphere, and the resilience of national symbols passed down to future generations.

On September 30, 2026, a new Ukrainian postage block titled "National Preserve ‘Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’. 100 Years" will be officially issued and valid for postal use nationwide.
