The stamp issue is dedicated to the 900th anniversary of the construction of one of the most famous religious and architectural monuments in Ukraine, St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery.

Founded in 1108 during the reign of Yaroslav the Wise's grandson, Prince Sviatopolk Izyaslavych of Kyiv, it played an important role in the history of Kyivan Rus and Ukrainian Orthodoxy.

In the 1930s, St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral was destroyed by the Bolsheviks but restored in 1997-1998.

During the 2014 Euromaidan, some people took refuge on its grounds after fleeing from the Berkut police.
