Description:

Ukrposhta and the popular science media outlet Kunsh present the postal issue Freedom in the Equation, which answers a question often asked in academic circles abroad: “Why are there still no Nobel Prize winners among scientists in Ukraine?” The answer is short: because Russia killed or repressed many brilliant scientists.

And now Russia is physically destroying Ukrainian scientists: according to the project “Ukrainian Scientists at War,” at least 165 scientists have died during the full-scale invasion. “Freedom in the Equation” demonstrates Ukraine's scientific potential, lost as a result of genocidal wars. Freedom in the Equation first appeared as an exhibition at Harvard as part of the Science at Risk project, supported by Kunscht and the ZMIN Foundation, in collaboration with My Science, Ukrainian Scientists at War, and the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University. The exhibition continues to travel to universities in the US and Ukraine, and now has a new format — postage stamps.

The stamp sheet tells the stories of ten Ukrainian scientists: from biologist Valentina Radzymowska, arrested in 1929 in the USSR, to biophysicist Bizhan Sharopov, a soldier in the Armed Forces of Ukraine who died in the war in 2022. The scientists were selected for the issue by Oleksiy Boldyrev, a molecular biologist and founder of the My Science portal, and Khristina Semeryn, a literary scholar and publicist. The portraits of the scientists were created by Niklas Elmhed, the official artist of the Nobel Prize.

The sheet offered is unnumbered and includes 28 «Freedom in the Equation» stamps with a face value of U.
