The Soviet totalitarian system branded it a “nationalist symbol.” The use of the trident in the USSR was severely punished.

By restoring independence in 1991 and choosing the trident as its state emblem, Ukraine demonstrated its commitment to following in the footsteps of the Ukrainian People's Republic. Russian aggression in Crimea and eastern Ukraine began with the destruction of the trident as a marker of Ukrainian identity. Today, the trident unites Ukrainian patriots who defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
