Personalized Stamp Issue: 75 Years of Ukrainian Television

Television broadcasting in Ukraine began 75 years ago: on May 7, 1951, an amateur television studio in Kharkiv, headed by V. Vovchanka, carried out the first electronic television transmission. On November 5–7 of the same year, the first professional television programmes were broadcast from the Kyiv Television Centre at 26 Khreshchatyk Street.

At the time, the Kyiv Television Centre stood out for its state-of-the-art technical equipment. The first television broadcasts were in black and white, and programmes were initially broadcast mainly live or shown from film reels.

As technology developed, television broadcasting gradually expanded its capabilities. The introduction of color television began in the late 1960s.

Over several decades, television evolved from a technological novelty into one of the most important means of mass communication, shaping the country’s shared information space.
