Description:

On December 14, 1918, after the abdication of Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky, the Directory was established in Ukraine, and the state was renamed the Ukrainian People's Republic. In 1919, the government of the Directory ordered a series of 14 postage stamps with denominations ranging from 1 to 200 hryvnias from the Military Geographic Institute in Vienna. This issue is known as the Vienna series. The stamps depicted the following subjects and figures: 1 hryvnia - coat of arms of the Ukrainian People's Republic, 2 hryvnia - allegory “Young Ukraine,” 3 hryvnia - a hut under straw, 5 hryvnia - a team of oxen, 10 hryvnia - Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 15 hryvnia - Ivan Mazepa, 20 hryvnia - Taras Shevchenko, 30 hryvnia - Pavlo Polubotok, 40 hryvnia - Simon Petliura, 50 hryvnia - a Cossack musician, 60 hryvnia - the building of the Parliament of the Ukrainian People's Republic, 80 hryvnia - Cossacks on a boat, 100 hryvnia - a monument to St. Volodymyr, 200 hryvnia - a windmill. Printing was completed on May 31, 1921, but due to the defeat of the Directory, these stamps were not used. The design of the eight stamps and the overall design of the series was created by Ukrainian artist M. Ivasiuk. In 2010, in honor of the Vienna series, Ukrposhta issued two blocks entitled “90 Years of Postage Stamps of the Ukrainian People's Republic”.
