Kropyvnytskyi's name is associated with the creation of the first professional theater (theater of coryphaei) in pre-Russian Ukraine. It was opened in Yelisavethrad (now Kropyvnytskyi) in 1882. Despite all the restrictions, performances were held in Ukrainian.
