Yaroslav the Wise ascended the throne of Kyiv in 1019. He ruled for 35 years, during which Rus' entered a period of high prosperity and became one of the most powerful countries in medieval Europe.

The prince is remembered as an outstanding diplomat who established ties with European states and concluded dynastic alliances. He himself was married to the daughter of the Swedish king Ingigerda. His youngest daughter Anna married King Henry I of France, Elizabeth married King Harold of Norway, and Anastasia married King Adrian of Hungary. The prince's sister Maria was married to King Casimir I of Poland.

The postal issue, put into circulation on September 20, 2019, is dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the reign of Yaroslav the Wise.
