The Chernihiv Principality (11th-13th centuries) was a principality of the Rurik dynasty in the territory of modern Chernihiv and Sivershchyna, centered in the city of Chernihiv. According to historical sources, it is known that in 1024 Mstyslav the Brave, brother of Yaroslav the Wise, took the throne of Chernihiv. Thus, Chernihiv became the capital of one of the largest principalities in Kyivan Rus, whose lands stretched to the Oka, the Don, and the Sea of Azov. The Chernihiv principality stretched far to the northeast, as far as Murom and Ryazan, and to the southeast to the Great Steppe.
