Mykhailo Starytsky (1840–1904) was a writer (poet, playwright, and prose writer), translator, theatrical, and cultural and public figure.

Ivan Franko called him the "father of Ukrainian theater", because in 1882, together with M. Kropyvnytsky, Mykhailo Petrovych created the first Ukrainian professional studio. Starytsky wrote poems, novels, translated a lot, and he was a real teacher of young Ukrainian writers.

Based on the plots of M. Gogol’s works, he created the plays “Christmas Night”, “Sorochyn Fair”, “Taras Bulba” and others. His poetic legacy is rich in translations by O. Pushkin, M. Lermontov, M. Nekrasov, G. Heine, D. Byron, A. Mickiewicz ... A significant event was the publication of "Hamlet" by W. Shakespeare translated by Staritsky.

The artist also made a great contribution to Ukrainian drama. Starting with the staging of prose and adaptations of short plays. The drama "Oh, don't go, Hrytsia, and at the party" and the play "For two hares" became very popular.

Of particular importance are his historical dramas: "Bohdan Khmelnytsky", "Marusya Boguslavka".
