The night of March 26-27, 2022, was the first time that the residents of Okhtyrka have been quiet since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On March 27, the active phase of the fighting for this town in Sumy region ended.

Since then, active work has begun to clear the area of mines and restore damaged buildings and infrastructure.

For the massive heroism and resilience of citizens shown in the defense of the city, Okhtyrka, which has become an insurmountable outpost against the further advance of the Russian army deep into the territory of Ukraine, was awarded the honorary award "Hero City of Ukraine" by Presidential Decree No. 164/2022.

The postage stamp “City of Heroes. Okhtyrka” depicts the building of the Okhtyrka City Council, which was destroyed as a result of an enemy attack.
