Description:

The labeled envelope depicts a monument to St. Volodymyr against the backdrop of a Kyiv winter landscape. The landscape, which is familiar to almost every Ukrainian, was painted by Roman Sushchenko, a journalist and correspondent, self-taught artist, and prisoner of the Kremlin from September 30, 2016, to September 7, 2019.

It was during his imprisonment that he created a series of drawings, including the one reproduced on the envelope.

It was forbidden to transfer paints or pencils to the Moscow detention center where Roman was held, so he had to draw with ballpoint pens and sometimes with anything else that was suitable for that purpose-tea, onion peels, beet juice, etc.

Nevertheless, the drawings were surprisingly professional and skillful, and the hobby, which lasted from childhood, helped to distract and reject constant thoughts about the place where the author was.

Every year, on January 12, the Day of the Ukrainian Political Prisoner is celebrated in honor of people who were arrested because of their political beliefs.
